Office Vaginal Speculum Exam is now active as of September 1, 2023. How will this affect my billing?

Effective for dates of service on or after Sept 1, 2023 – new fee 14562 Office Vaginal Speculum Exam (extra), is now active. This fee is billable only by family physicians.


As a result of this new fee 14541 Removal of intrauterine device (IUD) – operation only and 14560 Routine pelvic examination including Pap smear are no longer billable by family physicians for dates of service on or after Sept 1, 2023.


Please note the tips below to optimize your billings of 14562 Office Vaginal Speculum Exam (extra):



  • 14562 is payable at 100% in addition to the office visit fee and a mini tray fee (00044). If you are experiencing challenges with receiving full payment for 14562 claims submitted to Teleplan please contact billing@bcfamilydocs.ca for support.

  • An appropriate office visit fee (e.g. in office 0100-series, counselling 0120-series, consultation 110-series, complete exam 101-series, 14090 prenatal complete exam, 14091 prenatal subsequent exam, 14094 postnatal) must be billed in addition to 14562.

  • 14562 is delegable, but the associated office visit fee is not 

  • 14562 may be billable for various clinical scenarios that require the use of a speculum for a vaginal exam, including but not limited to: PAP’s, IUD removals, vulvar complaints, vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, STI collection, abnormal bleeding, infertility, unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms etc. 

  • No specific ICD-9 code submission is required in conjunction with a submission of 14562, use the most clinically appropriate code. This can be the same ICD-9 code as the office visit fee code
