There are many common misconceptions and misinterpretations of the current payment rules related to referrals and consultations. The Doctors of BC’s Tariff Committee recently created a Consultation Working Group to undertake a review of these payment rules in order to provide thorough and clear answers to common questions.
The result is a list of clarifications and a substantial set of FAQ’s to help you correctly interpret the language of the Payment Schedule as it relates to referrals and consultations.
We have updated our BC Family Doctors Billing Questions Library with answers to frequently asked questions about referrals and consultations, as well as specific FAQ’s that apply to referring doctors and consulting doctors. These can also be found on the Doctors of BC website and accessed by all specialties of physicians.
A single unified and agreed-upon understanding of the payment rules related to referrals and consultations benefits everyone: family doctors, consultant physicians, MOAs, and patients who may receive conflicting advice from various sources. It will also ensure that staff at Doctors of BC, MSP, and HIBC can provide the same guidance when fielding questions.
We will continue to update the information on our website as new information is received from Doctors of BC. Please don’t hesitate to send us a billing question should you require support from one of our physician billing experts.
