How do I bill for pertussis immunization for pregnant patients during flu season?
October 6, 2022

BC Family Doctors has successfully advocated for reactivating the temporary respiratory immunization fees 10040 and 10041 for influenza, pneumococcal and pertussis immunization in pregnancy.
During flu season (Oct 1, 2022-April 30 2023), a Pertussis immunization during pregnancy can be billed using:
- 10040 (using ICD-9 code V036) plus the age-appropriate visit service when the pertussis immunization in pregnancy is done with an in-person visit for an unrelated reason (office visit, prenatal visit, counselling, consultation etc.).
- 10040 (using ICD-9 code V036) when the primary purpose of the service is for pertussis immunization in pregnancy.
Note: if you are billing 10040 or 10041 x 2 for a pertussis immunization in pregnancy AND an influenza immunization, the second claim must be submitted with submission code D or it will be refused.
