Cities and towns in our province are growing – but our healthcare infrastructure isn’t keeping pace. More than 700,000 of almost 5.7 million British Columbians don’t have a family doctor.

The 1000+ new family doctors added to our health system recently are struggling to find a place to practice. And those already practicing face high costs, preventing them from expanding their clinics and enabling team-based healthcare providers.  BC Family Doctors is committed to removing barriers to help physicians create and grow their practices – because everyone deserves a family doctor.

The Challenge:

  • Critical shortage of suitable, affordable medical space in communities.
  • Patients can’t get a family doctor if there is nowhere for them to practice
  • Lack of planning and development for community-based healthcare

The Solution:

  • Make healthcare infrastructure a standard part of community planning
  • Require developers to build community health clinic spaces in new developments, like condominiums
  • Integrate healthcare infrastructure requirements into municipal zoning and development policies

BC Municipalities Support this Campaign!

At the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention in 2025, municipal leaders endorsed a resolution to make community-based clinic ready spaces in new developments part of standard community planning. Your community wants to be part of the solution!

We are at the UBCM convention again this year working to ensure healthcare space is as essential to community planning as community centres, libraries, childcare and parks.

We encourage members to share these resources with local municipal candidates to support the development of primary care spaces in all communities.
