Alongside the BC College of Family Physicians we shared a campaign called Fragmented Systems, Fragmented Care during Red Tape Awareness Week in January 2026. The campaign was created to build awareness about the administrative burden that BC family physicians are facing because of disconnected digital systems. As part of the campaign, we surveyed family physicians to find out how rep tape impacts their practices.

Survey Results

We surveyed 161 family doctors from across BC and found that doctors are facing significant administrative burden and digital red tape which is stealing time away from the patients.

A few key results include:

  • 1/3 of participants routinely use 4-5 systems to manage patient care.
  • 39% of family physicians duplicate information into multiple systems on a weekly basis.
  • Half of physicians report spending more than 30 mins a day on issues related to poor EMR interoperability.

Next Steps

The survey results indicate a need to improve current conditions that family physicians are experiencing. EMR interoperability and modernization of digital systems to reduce inefficiencies could greatly improve primary care delivered by BC family physicians.
