When the patient does not want to or is unable to take their own sample, they can see a physician who can:

  • collect a liquid-based cytology sample (same method as previous, aka Pap), or
  • collect a vaginal sample with an HPV vaginal self-screening device

If you take the vaginal sample with a HPV self-screening device, this is billable as an in-person interaction (98031/98061) as it does not require a speculum exam.

When a physician provides cervical cytology testing (aka Pap) at the LFP clinic, you can bill an In-person Interaction with a Standard Procedure (98021/98051).

In addition, the time spent providing patient care is included as part of the total direct patient care time billed over the day using 98010/98040.
