President’s Update: Perspectives shape perspective

As I reflect on our Board meeting held earlier this month, what struck me the most was the contrast in how I felt walking into that meeting versus walking out. I remember being excited to spend time with colleagues on some visionary and impactful work, but at the same time, I felt the heaviness of all that is happening around us – the uncertain times provincially, nationally and internationally.

When I left that Board meeting, I felt like I was walking on air! No, we didn’t solve all the world’s – or our profession’s – problems, but we did put some of them in perspective and we reminded ourselves of the power of our collective voice.

Elders from the Uut Uuštukyuu Society joined us for the afternoon and they shared incredible stories and insights. Sharing their healing traditions helped nudge us to think outside of our conventional world of family medicine. I was riveted by their practice of treating our mind, body and souls as one. The interconnectivity was profound, and I am eager to find more opportunities for all of us to work with and learn from physicians and healers in Indigenous communities. Learning, listening and being open to new ideas and traditions is crucial as we strengthen our organization’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.

The Board also reviewed our near complete strategic plan, which is a culmination of what you – our members – have told us. Our new plan reflects the priorities you want for your profession and practice, regardless of where you work or the stage of your career. The plan builds on our role as the political and economic voice of family doctors, and we are excited to share it with you during our Annual General Meeting on June 18th.

The in-depth conversations with our members leading up to strategic plan development, along with the profound insights from the Uut Uuštukyuu Society Elders, has had a significant impact on me. Your perspectives have broadened my perspective, and I am thankful.

Let’s continue to use our voices – together — to shape the future we want for ourselves, our profession, our patients and the communities around us. See you at the AGM on June 18th.
