Family doctors are the backbone of health care. That’s who we turn to for help managing chronic conditions, preventing illness or treating everyday health concerns. But in British Columbia—and across Canada—getting access to primary care isn’t always easy.

The latest report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information highlights the critical gap in services: about one in five Canadians can’t access primary care when they need it. Here in B.C., the shortage of family doctors is a growing concern. Long wait times and lack of access are forcing many people to rely on emergency rooms or go without care altogether.

Improving access to primary care is essential. It means fewer trips to the ER, better management of chronic diseases, and healthier communities. In B.C., solutions like team-based care, virtual health options, and better support for family doctors are needed to make this happen.

The message is clear: prioritizing primary care will improve health outcomes for British Columbians and take pressure off the rest of the system.
