British Columbia has introduced a new publicly funded In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) program effective July 2, 2025, aimed at reducing financial barriers for families seeking fertility treatment.
The program provides one-time funding of up to $19,000 toward a single standard cycle of IVF treatment for eligible BC residents. To qualify, individuals must be enrolled in the Medical Services Plan (MSP), meet all eligibility criteria, and complete an income verification process. Applications for funding must be submitted by a participating BC fertility clinic.
The funding uses a scaled income-tested model designed to ensure those with the greatest financial need receive the most support, improving equitable access to fertility treatments across the province.
MSP coverage of fertility investigations and treatment remain unchanged.
Examples include:
- MSP-covered physician visits and consultations: family physician, obstetrician, urologist, and more
- Investigations: bloodwork, semen analysis, and diagnostic imaging (e.g. ultrasound)
- Management of medical conditions: hypothyroidism, PCOS, hyperprolactinemia
- Diagnostic procedures and fertility-related surgeries: hysteroscopy, hysteroscopic surgery, laparoscopy
Note: While the IVF program provides public funding, it is not classified as a MSP-insured service, though MSP enrollment is required for patient eligibility.
Referral processes remain unchanged
The referral process for patients to access fertility investigations and treatments, including IVF, remains the same as before. Patients will continue following established pathways through their physicians.
