As family physicians working across British Columbia, we witness daily the growing inequities experienced by patients in rural and remote communities. Currently, rural physicians face radical choices when patients need transfer. They must leave their communities to escort patients which leads to local emergency department closures and deepens staffing shortages.

Interprofessional teams of physicians, nurses and paramedics can solve this problem by providing safe emergency transport and care while keeping local care teams in their communities. Med Response BC’s Interprofessional Prehospital and Retrieval Medicine (PHRM) Program offers a complimentary – not competitive – service to BC Emergency Health Services. Interprofessional patient transport teams align with our Fair Care Everywhere Campaign  and our shared commitment to team-based care that serves all communities.

The ability to integrate team-based care and provide access to timely, longitudinal care is an essential part of our mission. Everyone deserves a family doctor, and every doctor deserves to be able to care for their patients without having to compromise their community.
